Association

FOUNDED 1933

The Isle of Wight Canine Association is a friendly, social dog club offering weekly Ringcraft Training; monthly Matches leading to a Dog of the Year final, and a Limit and Open Show under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations.

It is a non-profit club, committee managed organisation run by volunteers. Our membership is island-wide and we are the oldest canine training club on the island.

Ringcraft

We offer ringcraft training on Tuesday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.00pm at East Cowes Town Hall, York Ave, East Cowes PO32 6RU for a very nominal fee.

Your class and membership fees go towards the costs of venues, insurance and special events for the membership..

Training

Training sessions are designed to be fun, but at the same time informative, in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We also have several “A” List Judges who are on hand to pass on their knowledge and experience.

Our trainers and committee members give their time, training and expertise on a voluntary basis.

Dog Shows

We hold monthly Matches with a Dog of the Year final in January. Matches are the third Tuesday of every month starting promptly at 7.30pm so please be there by 7.15pm at the latest to Enter.

We generally hold our shows in Spring (Open Show), Summer (Member's Limit Show) and Autumn (Open Show).

History

The Isle of Wight Canine Association was founded in 1933: the first record of a meeting is dated November 29, 1933. The Kennel Club Application Form for Registration of Title is stamped 5 January 1934 and signed by a Capt John Dibly of Salent Lodge, Cowes.

The reasons for the club: “The promotion of interest in dogs, dog shows and the improvement of types of dogs bred.”

Interestingly it also states that the title (name of the club) had been used “by another Society which finished in 1929 for apparently 16 years as near as I can find but owing to the then Secretary having left the district.”
